Creature Contest entry

KAPPA

Egg description:

This egg is somewhat bumpy and shaded. It seems to have a plate surrounded with indigo frills on the top.

Hatchling description:

Unlike the egg it hatched from; this hatchling possesses smooth, glimmering petal like turquoise scales. Its skin is rough to the touch, has an unidentified yellowish beak, webbed hands and feet with sharp claws and a carapace on its back. The only similarity you see form its previous stage is the tiny little plate surrounded with floppy indigo frills. Mischievous in nature, the favorite past time of this little creature is playing tricks on you, your other fellow magis and swimming in the nearby pond with its “friends” the koi fishes. In most of the cases, however its decision to “play” with the kois end-up in misfortune for the fishy friends.

General description:

Kappa’s, their name literary meaning “child of the stream” is a mythical creature with a bird-like beak and a carapace which is very similar to the one commonly seen on any turtle. This extravagant, somewhat oddly looking creature has been thought to have been extinct during the past millennium due to the fact that they were over-hunted by greedy magis who were seeking their priceless carapace made out of an indestructible crystal-like mineral and their smooth graceful scales. Due to those reasons, Kappas were almost never known to have come into contact with any human being. That is the reason why the small portion of their eggs which are actually found by a magi is very commonly half focalized. Nonetheless, fortunately or unfortunately, in extremely rare occasions, a kappa may surface form a stream and propose a sumo wrestling duel with the first magi or creature it sees, promising to gift its precious carapace if he is ever defeated, but claming the opponent magi or creature as its prize if he is the victor. The only known way to win against a Kappa is to tip the plate on its head, thus spilling the water contained inside which is the main source of its exceptional and supernatural power.

Adult description:

A fully grown Kappa looks like a tri-spilt between a large child, a bird with a rounded beak and an aquatic turtle. Kappas have a very mischievous and trouble making nature, thus spend their time pulling pranks on innocent creatures. Enventhough their trickeries or never really hurtful, due to their behavior, they are commonly somewhat shunned by the other creatures. However, when properly trained and educated by a learned magi, Kappas can very often suppress their urge to play mischievous tricks and turn into a cute obedient and loving creature.

This is my drawing of a kappa. Please click the link.
